Comparison of productivity and capacity due to the impact of Covid-19 in the pharmaceutical industry with discrete-event simulations

Abstract.The Covid-19 pandemic has a significant impact on the production process in industry, including the drug industry. This study aims to measure the changes in productivity on the production floor that occur in the pharmaceutical industry due to the application of health protocols. The method used in this research is to compare the production results before and during the pandemic using discrete event simulations. The research begins with tracing prepandemic production documents, creating a representative simulation model, validating the model, taking production data during the pandemic, applying data during the pandemic to the model, conducting experiments, and comparing the results to providing recommendations. The results showed that during the pandemic there was a decrease in production capacity by up to 93%, but on the other hand there was an increase in labor productivity up to 135% compared to before the pandemic. Although production capacity during the pandemic was still availab le at 45% of the average monthly demand before the pandemic, it was already 9% less than the highest demand before the pandemic, so companies must anticipate the trend of increasing demand through inventories. The conclusion of this study is that the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic have a negative impact on production capacity, but have a positive impact on employee productivity. This research also proves that discrete event simulation is an effective tool for evaluating employee productivity and measuring the company's production capacity and by experimenting with the model using the to provide recommendations for future production planning activities.
